Ayşe Bilge Selçuk's general research areas are social and emotional development, socio-cognitive development, parenting, temperament, and culture. One branch of her research focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying individual differences in social development. These studies examine temperament traits and environmental factors (such as family and socio-cultural context) that influence the development of adaptive and maladaptive behaviors; and children in typical developmental contexts, as well as children growing up in educational institutions, immigrant children, children with autism and children with disabilities. Another branch of her research examines the role of culture in parents’ cognitions and behaviors.
She works on parent-child relationship and attachment theories, social and emotional development, children under state protection, play, play therapy and psychotherapy interventions. She wrote her Master's thesis on an attachment-focused semi-structured play therapy intervention program that focuses on the relationship between foster families and their children.
